Geek Squad is my HERO!!!

GEEK SQUAD WAS ABLE TO SALVAGE MY COMPUTER SO I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO LOSSES!!!! YIPEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you every one for all the wonderful support and help <3>

I most certainly will never again do any updates of that sort again...

Well I have completely lost my mother board on my computer and therefore have to take it into Best Buy tomorrow. ACK! in order for them to restore the system because my dumb butt didnt write the back up disk. Meaning I will lose all of butterfly's files.

Thank goodness I have a few characters on TSR, but this means that my next few updates will be most likely within the next month possibly longer being there is no way unless I pay 300 bucks for a backup copy of files, that I will be able to retrieve the anything from previous. *Screaming and pulling my hair out!

Then have to rebuild lots, create another ava, catherine franklin, henry so on so forth. ICK!

Hopefully everything will be resolved tomorrow morning, and I will have my baby back, OMG I have lost all my Roejena files!!!! That I paid for.... Crap.... I am so desolate right now 80(

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am down and out for a bit... Will update this post with any further info. 80)

Do you have another computer in the house? It's actually very easy to remove the hard drive - you should be able to find a how-to guide online. You can then add that hard drive to the other computer as a secondary drive. Once it's in the new computer, you can then back up all the files onto your external drive.

It's very easy to do. The only thing you might need is an IDE cable for the second computer so you can add your hard drive as a secondary drive, which is a lot less $$$ than paying someone else to retrieve your files for you.

Yes I do, the problem is my whole motherboard is fried, and I cant even get it past the bio's screen.

I have to use my bro's computer. and what is an IDE Cable? because I still dont have an external HD.

I forgot to say that every time I try to do anything it tells me there is no operating system installed and it wont let me do anything without the writable back up disk.

This will involve turning off your computer, unplugging it, then physically opening up your computer and removing the hard drive.

I found a site that will walk you through removing the hard drive, then setting it up as a slave (secondary drive) in another computer.

http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/

Step #12 shows you an IDE cable. Notice that the cable shown has two plug in parts, one to plug into the master drive, the second one to plug into the slave. If the IDE cable in the computer (the one you're moving the hard drive to) doesn't have two plugs, you'll need to buy a new cable. (There will be one plug that goes into your motherboard, then the two that go to the two hard drives.)

The walk though is a pretty good one. Make sure both computers are unplugged and that you're doing this in an area where you won't discharge a static charge to the internal components, which can damage them. And touch something metal first to discharge any static you may be carrying.

I've replaced drives myself with no problem, but I'm pretty fearless when it comes to stuff like that. If you're at all nervous about it, when you bring your computer in you can ask that they make the current hard drive a secondary (slave) drive and install a new hard drive in your computer as the primary (master) drive. Then when you get your computer back you'll still have your files on the secondary drive and can copy them to the new, main hard drive.

Does that make sense?

Thank you and yes it makes sense. I have installled many of my own components IE video card, memory etc. That required similar steps.

So I really thank you for this being I cant seem to figure this one out on my own. 80)

Hey cheripye! I'm sorry to hear about your mobo!! Hopefully you'll be able to retreieve something so you don't lose everything! :( That happened to me a couple months ago and I wasn't a very happy camper! *sigh*

Seems as if computer problems are going around like a cold in a kindergarden class! *_*

Saoz, what great info! Cheri, sorry to hear about your problems! Your files should be recoverable, that's the good news, but what a hassle!!

I am going right now to back up my sims files on a blank disc!

cheripye  – (10/12/2008 10:26 AM)

LOL, that is a perfect definition Phoenix. 80) I like that one.

And LOL! I highly suggest it, as a matter of fact just before I tried to update the MB I was trying to save my backup files to a disk too. But the cd writer decided to crap out on me.

I am keeping my fingers crossed though.

Cheers.
